Session 2F: Cultural Integration and Urban Identity

Maintaining urban identity is both an art and a science, sometimes necessitating the careful restoration of historic structures; at other times, it requires evaluating intangibles such as the culture of a designated neighborhood or master plan. The session features case studies of subjects ranging from the rehabilitation of century-old shikumen structures in a village near Shanghai; to the design origins of TAIPEI 101, which intentionally channels traditional Chinese aesthetics; to a macro-to-micro level analysis of how Asian megacities can improve social impact through well-integrated lower public spaces. It thus delves deeply into the mechanics of achieving a respectful and successful relationship between the public and the changing cities they inhabit.
